Freescale continues to lead in the microcontroller (MCU) market, with a strong focus on innovation and strategic growth. The company has seen remarkable success in 2014, particularly in e-book applications, general-purpose MCUs, and in-vehicle infotainment processors. Its ARM-based Kinetis MCU business experienced double-digit growth, while the i.MX division saw over 25% growth driven by automotive and industrial demand. Freescale’s sales revenue increased by more than 40% over two years, reflecting its continued dominance in key markets.
Geoff Lees, Senior Vice President of Freescale’s Microcontroller Division, highlighted that the semiconductor industry remains robust despite some market skepticism. While certain regions like China may experience slower 4G investment, the global semiconductor market is expected to reach $350 billion by 2015. Freescale is well-positioned to capitalize on this growth through its diverse product portfolio and strong partnerships.
As the leader in ARM-based microcontrollers, Freescale emphasizes security, scalability, and energy efficiency as the three pillars of the future IoT landscape. Security is critical, with both hardware and software protections designed to safeguard devices from potential threats. Scalability ensures that systems can grow seamlessly, whether in smart homes, cities, or industrial environments. Energy efficiency remains a top priority, especially with the rise of low-power wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Freescale is also investing heavily in China, where it has five R&D centers, including four focused on MCU development. Its Tianjin facility is the largest packaging and testing site globally, handling 90% of Freescale’s MCU products. In 2014, the company expanded its presence in China with new sales offices and innovative development platforms tailored for local engineers.
One such platform is the MAPS four-color board series, designed specifically for Chinese developers. It supports a wide range of Freescale MCUs and offers flexibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. This initiative reflects Freescale’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the growing ecosystem of embedded systems in China.
Looking ahead, Freescale aims to maintain its competitive edge by launching new products, expanding into emerging markets, and strengthening strategic alliances. Recent acquisitions, such as Zenverge, have further enhanced its capabilities in IoT solutions. With plans to double MCU revenue in 2015 and introduce new low-cost processors for the Chinese market, Freescale remains a key player in the evolving world of connected devices.
