“Brush Face” era brings huge market while relevant industry standards need to be improved

Face recognition technology has recently gained widespread attention, with "face brushing" becoming a trending topic. Apple's new iPhone X introduced a face unlock feature that can be used for Apple Pay and various app authentications. KFC in Hangzhou has also launched a commercial pilot for "face payment," while some banks are experimenting with facial recognition for ATM withdrawals. High-speed rail ticket checks and hotel check-ins are also adopting this technology. This technology is now deeply embedded in daily life, covering areas like clothing, food, housing, and transportation. The financial and security sectors have been early adopters, leading the way in applying this innovation. According to industry reports, China’s face recognition market exceeded 1 billion yuan in 2016 and is projected to reach about 5.1 billion yuan by 2021. As the technology matures, the "face brushing" era is rapidly approaching. Industry experts believe that face recognition is breaking through application barriers across multiple industries, creating increasingly diverse use cases. With advancements in deep learning algorithms, the accuracy of face recognition has significantly improved over the past five years. Large amounts of data collected from devices have become essential for training these systems, making them more reliable and efficient. There are three main applications of face recognition: 1:N authentication for access control and security monitoring, 1:1 authentication for real-name verification, and live body detection to ensure the user is present during transactions. Financial institutions, such as Ant Financial and CITIC Bank, have implemented these technologies in payments, withdrawals, and account openings. In urban security, face recognition has proven highly effective, enabling law enforcement to identify suspects quickly. For example, Shangtang Technology helped solve over 1,000 cases and capture more than 2,000 fugitives. In entertainment, apps like FACEU allow users to transform their photos into different characters for social media sharing. Experts predict that future developments will focus on improving accuracy, handling special cases like twins or plastic surgery, and expanding database sizes. While challenges remain, including privacy concerns and accuracy in real-world environments, companies are implementing measures like encryption, data desensitization, and multi-factor authentication to address these issues. Despite its potential, the lack of standardized regulations remains a concern. Experts emphasize the need for industry guidelines to ensure data security and protect user privacy. As face recognition continues to evolve, it will play an even greater role in shaping the future of smart homes, finance, and public safety.
