In addition to small passenger vehicles, a growing number of companies are now focusing on the development of self-driving trucks as the autonomous vehicle industry continues to expand. According to several international media reports, the leading autonomous driving technology company, Nvidia, has announced a collaboration with Deutsche Post DHL Group, one of Europe’s largest logistics firms. The partnership will involve large-scale testing of self-driving trucks in the coming year.
Nvidia, once best known for its graphics processing units (GPUs), has evolved into a major player in autonomous driving technology. The company has established strong relationships with automotive manufacturers and tech giants like Intel, further solidifying its position in the industry.
At a recent GPU Technology Conference in Munich, Germany, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed that Deutsche Post DHL Group plans to integrate self-driving systems from companies like Nvidia into its electric trucks. These systems will include cameras, radar, and lidar sensors. While the exact number of trucks involved in the test remains unclear, the initiative marks a significant step forward in autonomous logistics.
As part of the project, the German logistics company is using modified StreetScooter electric trucks. At the event, a self-driving version of the truck was showcased, equipped with six cameras, one radar, and two lidars. The autonomous system relies on Nvidia's "DrivePX platform," a high-performance computing unit powered by AI algorithms. This platform can process real-time data from multiple sensors and integrates high-definition 3D maps via cloud computing.
Deutsche Post DHL currently operates a fleet of 3,400 StreetScooter electric trucks, which could potentially be retrofitted with autonomous driving technology in the future. However, during the initial tests, human drivers will still be present to oversee operations and handle delivery tasks. Additionally, drivers are expected to use smartphones more frequently to optimize delivery routes and improve vehicle efficiency.
Kevin Curran, a transportation expert at Ulster University, noted that compared to human drivers, autonomous systems won’t get tired or distracted by activities such as listening to music or texting. This could lead to safer and more efficient long-haul deliveries.
Over the past one or two years, self-driving truck technology has seen rapid advancements. For example, Uber’s subsidiary recently conducted the first-ever automated long-haul truck delivery in the U.S. Meanwhile, Volvo introduced a new semi-truck featuring advanced driver-assistance systems, including automatic cruising and braking.
Major global automakers and tech companies, including Daimler, Volvo, Uber, and even Google’s Waymo, are investing heavily in self-driving truck development. Waymo has also confirmed it is working on autonomous truck technology and plans to conduct trials in Arizona later this year.
As the industry moves forward, the integration of self-driving trucks into commercial logistics is becoming increasingly viable, promising a future where automation plays a central role in freight transportation.
