The data transmission rate in serial communication is typically measured in bits per second (bps). This unit represents the number of bits transmitted or received each second. However, it's important to distinguish this from the baud rate, which is a different concept. Baud refers to the number of signal changes per second on a communication channel. It measures the frequency of electrical signals sent over the line, not the actual amount of data being transferred. In some cases, the baud rate and bps can be equal if each signal change corresponds to one data bit. However, when encoding techniques are used—such as those found in modems—the actual data transfer rate (in bps) can exceed the baud rate. This is because more information can be packed into each signal cycle through advanced encoding algorithms. A UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) is responsible for managing the electrical signaling of data transmission. When setting up a microcontroller or microprocessor’s serial port, the baud rate is usually specified as the unit of measurement. This ensures that both the sending and receiving devices operate at the same speed. While the baud rate is an electrical measure, the actual data transfer rate on the line is expressed in bits per second (bps), especially when using modulation techniques that enhance performance.
