Research on sapphire processing technology

The artificially grown sapphire is single crystal n-AI, q, transparent. It has the same optical properties and mechanical properties as natural gemstones. It has high infrared transmittance and good wear resistance. Its hardness is second only to diamonds. Grade 9 has good stability at high temperature and its melting point is 2030 °C. Therefore, it has been used more and more in high-tech fields such as solid-state laser, infrared window, semiconductor chip, and wear-resistant bearing. The materials used to make the parts are also made into a never-wearing mirror and a variety of exquisite luxury accessories.

Sapphire processing technology and problems

Because sapphire has high hardness and brittleness, it is very difficult to machine it. The mirror processing technology is more complicated and it is one of the key research topics today:

At present, China's sapphire mirror processing technology has the following deficiencies in mass production:

a. The proportion of gemstones in the process is high. The percentage of gemstones is 5% to 8%:

b. After grinding and polishing, the surface of the gemstone has a heavy scratch, and about 20% of the surface of the gemstone has thick and deep marks, which need to be re-polished and polished, so that some of the gemstones are thin and waste, and affect the production rhythm.

c. Due to rework and scrapping, the processing cost of gemstones is very high, and the average processing cost per piece is 3.5 yuan, which is not competitive in the international market.
