2014 MWC perspective: 4G has become a "corner" 5G "practice" busy

At the 2014 Mobile World Congress, 4G became the most sought-after “corner” without any controversy. Almost all exhibitors showed products, services or solutions related to 4G. With the first investment and continuous research in TD-LTE, China's telecommunications industry has won the opportunity to catch up with the traditional powers of Europe and the United States in the 4G era, and has already been at the world's leading level in the field of LTE, especially TD-LTE. However, the competition in the global mobile communications market is a relay race. This good performance does not mean that you can continue to lead in the next. Therefore, as the 4G sweeps across the globe, the industry has turned its attention to 5G-related research work, and hopes to win at the starting line.

There is a saying that "one minute on the stage, ten years of work under the stage", coincidentally, there is also a technological change every ten years in the field of mobile communications. According to this rule, 1G in 1980, 2G in 1990, 3G in 2000, and 4G in 2010, IMT-2020 (5G) technology will mature in 2020. As mobile communications are becoming more and more important for the development of the communications industry and society as a whole, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has initiated pre-research on 5G standardization and has developed a series of timetables: demand from July 2012 to July 2015 Vision proposal, which focuses on IMT market, user and business application trends for 2020 and beyond, and proposes the overall framework, objectives and capabilities of the future IMT system in combination with technology and spectrum, and proposes for follow-up research; July 2012 to In October 2014, the future technology trend research report was launched to explain the future development trend of mobile communication technology in terms of spectrum efficiency, bandwidth, service, user experience, energy saving, terminal, operational deployment, security, etc.; November 2015 World Radiocommunication Conference WRC Before the -15th, the research work on IMT spectrum demand forecasting, candidate frequency bands, channel measurement and modeling for WRC-15 was completed.

In order to take the initiative in the competition of mobile communications, governments around the world are actively supporting 5G technology research. As early as 2012, the EU launched the METIS research project, which invested 27 million euros in the EU, and 29 manufacturers, operators, research institutes and universities such as Ericsson and Nokia Communications. For example, South Korea, which has been moving rapidly in the field of mobile communications, has also established the 5G Forum Promotion Group, which includes major operators, manufacturers, research institutes and universities in Korea, and proposes Korean 5G national strategy and medium- and long-term planning. , research 5G concepts and needs. It is gratifying that China has accumulated sufficient experience and technical strength in the field of 3G and 4G, and has begun to lay out 5G, set up the IMT-2020 promotion group, formulate China's 5G technology and standard strategy, and carry out 5G demand, technology, standards and spectrum. Research on intellectual property rights, etc., to establish a 5G international cooperation promotion platform.

Whoever has established an advantage in basic standards research will be able to take the lead in market competition. From a global perspective, domestic and foreign mainstream manufacturers such as Huawei, ZTE, Datang, Ericsson, and Nokia Communications have begun 5G research.

At present, all parties in the industry have basically reached a consensus on the basic technical indicators and development drivers of 5G. Dr. Tong Wen, director of the Huawei 2012 Laboratory Wireless Research and Communication Technology Laboratory, said at the 5G Summit in Munich on the eve of the 2014 World Mobile Communications Conference that the first batch of 5G networks is expected to be commercially available by 2020, and the capacity will be 1000 for the existing network. Times, the maximum rate will reach 10Gbps. He also revealed that Huawei has invested in 5G since 2009 and decided to invest 600 million US dollars by 2018 for research and innovation in this field.

Supporting the mobile Internet and the Internet of Things is the main driver of 5G development, and 5G will be more widely used in all walks of life. In the recent white paper "5G - Driving Physics and Digital World Integration", ZTE pointed out that in addition to enabling seamless connectivity between people, 5G can also strengthen "people and things" and "objects and things". A high-speed connection between them creates a new digital ecosystem that drives network traffic to accelerate growth. 5G will be the most important foundation in the M-ICT era. Its development direction is centered on the “human experience” and further integration and innovation in the fields of terminal, wireless, network and business. At the same time, 5G will revolutionize the ability of “people” to perceive, acquire, participate and control information. In addition, 5G will be expanded from the public user market to the industry user market. The 5G network will absorb the excellent characteristics of the cellular network and the local area network to form a smarter, more friendly and more widely used network.

Ericsson, Datang, Nokia Communications, etc. have also released white papers for 5G. At this World Mobile Communications Conference, many manufacturers are actively promoting 5G while highlighting 4G to demonstrate their innovative capabilities. For example, Ericsson has set up a “Looking to the Future” exhibition area to showcase its 5G system solution concept and mobile broadband evolution case.

Obviously, the competition of 5G technology has quietly begun. I hope that all parties in the Chinese communication industry will seize the opportunity of vigorous development of mobile broadband, actively cooperate and innovate, and realize the transformation from a big communication country to a communication power in the 4G and 5G era.
