Microsoft's personal assistant, Xiaona, recently received an update to its 2.9 version, with a particular focus on enhancing features for the mobile experience. The update emphasizes cross-platform interoperability between mobile and PC devices. During an interview with Sina Technology, Microsoft revealed that Xiaona will act as the voice interactive system and will be integrated into their upcoming smart speaker from Harmon Kardon, which is set to launch this fall.
Xiaona made its debut in China in 2014, marking three years since its introduction to the local market. Initially designed for life services, Xiaona has expanded its capabilities to include work and study-related functionalities such as scheduling and job recommendations. Since 2016, Xiaona has been integrating third-party services and devices like car stereos, home appliances, and even NetEase Cloud Music.
This latest update brings several new features to the table, particularly targeting the mobile user. These include an updated interface with a lock screen plugin option available for the first time on iOS, seamless communication between Xiaona accounts and Microsoft Office software, enhanced email intelligence using machine learning to extract key information from emails and provide timely reminders, bilingual (Chinese-English) voice recognition, and improved file sharing between mobile and PC devices. Files transferred via Xiaona can be accessed directly on the computer, allowing users to resume recent tasks or open documents and webpages instantly. Future updates planned for the fall will further explore cross-platform integration.
According to Yan Baogang, Cortana, Xiaona's global counterpart, boasts over 145 million users who collectively ask around 12 billion questions annually, averaging ten questions per user. While Xiaona leans towards efficiency solutions, its counterpart, Xiao Bing, focuses more on entertainment and social interactions, offering a distinct user experience.
In the upcoming Harmon Kardon smart speaker, Xiaona will serve as the underlying voice interaction system, with tailored optimizations specifically for the speaker hardware. This collaboration aims to bring a cohesive and advanced voice assistant experience to users, further solidifying Xiaona's role in Microsoft's growing ecosystem of intelligent products.
