Microsoft's Xiao Na feature upgrade will be implanted with Microsoft's first smart speaker

Microsoft's personal assistant, Xiaona, recently received an update to its 2.9 version, with a particular focus on enhancing features for the mobile experience. The update emphasizes cross-platform interoperability between mobile and PC environments. During an interview with Sina Technology, Microsoft representatives explained that Xiaona will act as a voice interactive support system, integrated into their upcoming smart speaker collaboration with Harmon Kardon. The speaker is set to launch this fall. Xiaona made its debut in China in July 2014 as part of Microsoft’s Cortana suite, marking three years since its introduction in the region. Initially, Xiaona was available on Windows Phones and later extended to iOS and Windows 10 PCs. Its service offerings have evolved from life services to work and learning tools like scheduling and job recommendations. Starting in 2016, Xiaona began integrating third-party services and devices, including car stereos, home appliances, and NetEase Cloud Music. This latest update includes several new features aimed at enhancing the mobile experience. First, Xiaona introduces a lock screen plug-in function on iOS for the first time, alongside improvements to the interface display, reminder lists, and settings. Second, Xiaona accounts now offer real-time communication with Microsoft Office software, making logins more seamless. Third, email intelligence has been enhanced through machine learning, allowing Xiaona to extract key information from emails and prompt users accordingly. Additionally, Xiaona now supports mixed Chinese-English voice recognition, facilitates file sharing between mobile and PC, and allows users to retrieve recent tasks performed on their computers, such as open documents or browser tabs. Files sent via Xiaona can also be edited directly on the computer. According to Yan Baogang, Cortana has amassed over 145 million users globally, handling approximately 12 billion user queries, with each user asking an average of 10 questions. In terms of product strategy, Xiaona leans more towards efficiency solutions, though it goes beyond just boosting productivity. Another Microsoft voice assistant, Xiao Bing, focuses more on entertainment and social engagement, creating a distinct differentiation between the two products. For Microsoft's upcoming smart speaker release this fall, Xiaona will power the voice interaction system and undergo further optimization for the device. This collaboration with Harmon Kardon marks a significant step forward for Xiaona, as it aims to integrate seamlessly into users' daily lives across multiple platforms.
