The MAX12900 is a highly integrated 4-20mA sensor transmitter that offers significant improvements in size, power efficiency, and accuracy. This ultra-low-power device helps industrial automation systems achieve compact, energy-efficient, and precise designs. It is ideal for applications such as industrial automation, process control, remote meters, and smart sensors, especially where space and power constraints are critical.
As system designers push for more advanced 4-20mA sensor transmitters, they face growing challenges. These include achieving higher measurement accuracy across wide temperature ranges while also reducing the physical size of the design to meet miniaturization demands. Additionally, meeting strict power requirements—such as ensuring the total current does not exceed 4 mA—is essential for loop-powered systems.
The MAX12900 addresses these challenges with its 10 ppm/°C voltage reference, which provides a 3.5x reduction in temperature drift compared to traditional solutions, significantly enhancing system accuracy. Its compact 5mm x 5mm package integrates 10 optimized circuit blocks, resulting in up to 50% space savings over conventional 4-20mA transmitters. The device simplifies power-up control by integrating a high-voltage LDO and power sequencing, further streamlining the design process.
With a maximum current consumption of just 250µA, the MAX12900 reduces power usage by up to 50% compared to traditional solutions. It also allows microcontroller-based systems to convert PWM signals into a 4-20mA loop current using 2, 3, or 4-wire configurations, reducing solution complexity and lowering overall system costs. The MAX12900 is available in a 32-pin TQFN package and operates reliably over an industrial temperature range from -40°C to +125°C.
Key Benefits
- Compact Design: Up to 50% smaller than conventional solutions, with a 5mm x 5mm package
- High Accuracy: 10 ppm/°C voltage reference, 3.5x lower temperature drift, and 0.01% linearity
- Low Power: 50% less power consumption, with a maximum current under 250µA
- Flexible Configuration: Supports 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire setups
"With the MAX12900, we can implement both 2-wire and 3-wire configurations in our designs. Its high precision makes it compatible with both mid-range and high-end 4-20mA transmitters," said Juergen Schmollinger, Head of Product Development at IFM Pressure Sensors.
"The combination of integration, flexibility, low power, and high accuracy makes the MAX12900 perfect for low-power sensor transmitters and industrial safety applications," added Carmelo Morello, Executive Business Manager at Maxim Integrated.
