Interview with Prof. Zhan Qingxuan, the “Taidou” in the architectural lighting industry

Professor Zhan Qingxuan, the architect of the architectural lighting industry (Zhan Qingxuan teacher Aladdin lighting network column blog)

In the early winter morning, in Tsinghua University, I saw Professor Zhan Qingxuan, who has been over the ages. He still looks so spiritual. Peace and kindness is the first impression he left for the reporter. Let us seriously interpret the masters of the architectural lighting industry in China.

â– Personal track

Young age, love art, 17 years old, admitted to Tsinghua University

Zhan Qingxuan, a native of Shandong Province, was born in a cultural family. His father studied in the United States in his early years and then taught at Hebei University, where he studied ancient literature. Shortly after his birth, he moved to Jinan, where he spent his childhood and youth.

When he mentioned himself as a teenager, Zhan Qingxuan called himself a slightly introverted student. He studied in the famous Jinan No. 1 Middle School and he liked art very much. He used to be the art production of the school-level blackboard newspaper. When he graduated from high school, he faced the question of which university to take and which major to choose. At that time, people paid more attention to engineering, and they had the idea of learning mathematics and physics, and they were not afraid of going all over the world. Influenced by the environment at the time and his own art hobby, he chose Tsinghua University's architecture major with both science and art, and entered the top Chinese university with excellent results. In this way, in 1953, the 17-year-old Zhan Qingxuan began his life in Beijing, and thus embarked on the road of entanglement with architectural lighting.

Tsinghua 50 years of complex lighting to create a precedent

After 6 years of schooling, he has been teaching for more than 49 years. Since entering the architecture department of Tsinghua University, Zhan Qingxuan began his love relationship with Tsinghua University, and he began his lifelong relationship with architecture and lighting.

Since graduation, Zhan Qingxuan has been teaching at Tsinghua University. From a young teacher to the current professor of architecture, he has experienced nearly half a century. He has quietly studied and worked for China's architectural lighting industry, devoted his life to the low tide of architectural lighting in China, seized the opportunity of the rise of urban and architectural lighting in recent years, and participated in and led the research on the design and application of architectural lighting in China. development of.

When I entered Tsinghua, because there was no independent major in the architecture department at the time, Zhan Qing was an architect. Influenced by the great environment at that time, he learned entirely about the architectural design concepts and contents of the Soviet Union. Architectural physics courses include architectural acoustics, architectural optics, and building thermals, but architectural optics only involves natural lighting, mainly lighting standards, lighting calculations, lighting methods, etc., without knowledge of electrical lighting. When he graduated in 1958, Zhan Qingxuan's class participated in the design of the former National Grand Theatre. He began to get into contact with the combination of lighting and architecture in design, and deeply felt that lighting should be an integral part of architectural design, especially interior design. . After graduating from teaching, Zhan Qingxuan was assigned to work as a teaching and researcher in architectural optics. At that time, China's research on architectural light environment was just beginning. It can be said that Zhan Qingxuan is one of the pioneers in the study of architectural light environment in China. He participated in the lighting design research of the National Art Museum of China in the 1950s, established the architectural optical laboratory in the 1960s, completed the study of lighting calculation methods in the 1970s, and carried out research on the development of residential lighting development and lighting energy conservation in the 1980s. In the 1990s, except for the light environment. In addition to major research projects, he also participated in the planning and design of many architectural and urban landscape lighting. Among them, the lighting design of Wangfujing Commercial Street has always been highly regarded. The night view of Wangfujing and its surrounding open green areas (Huangchenggen Relics Park, Changpu River Park) has become a classic scenery in Beijing. Bringing up the lighting project of Wangfujing, Zhan Qingxuan said: Wangfujing's landscape lighting effect is mainly due to the encounter with a wise owner and the formation of an excellent team of different professional designers. Everyone is very professional and very dedicated. . In the face of a common design project, professionals put forward their own ideas, and they are very harmonious. If there is no planning, construction, transportation, gardening, sculpture, engineering construction, management and other departments to cooperate with the lighting profession, it is impossible to dress up the whole street by lighting alone. The professional lighting design is to present the beauty of the building under the mapping of the lights, which will play a role in icing on the cake. Lighting = technology + art, this is a concept that Zhan Qingxuan has been strictly following. Lighting is not only a technology, but also an art. Only by combining the two closely is the lighting design in the true sense. Zhan Qingxuan said.

Teaching dozens of peaches and plums all over the world

Throughout the development of the lighting industry in China for half a century, Zhan Qingxuan felt a lot. Before the reform and opening up, due to the influence of the social and economic environment, China's lighting industry developed very slowly. The lighting design was mixed with architectural design and electrical design. The branch of the system; in terms of teaching materials, there are few professional books on lighting design; there are almost no professional lighting design talents. Because of this, in the early 1960s, Zhan Qingxuan first wrote the architectural lighting content for the architectural text "Architectural Optics", introduced the excellent lighting cases of architectural engineering, and expounded the concept of architectural art lighting and night lighting. Became a model for early students to learn architectural lighting design. In the late 1980s, he wrote the book "Building Light Environment", which enriched the content of architectural lighting and introduced the concept of light environment design. The book won the second prize of the first Science and Technology Book of the Ministry of Construction and was issued in Taiwan and overseas.

Speaking of the achievements of his half-century education, Zhan Qingxuan said: The biggest achievement of my decades of teaching career is to cultivate a group of students engaged in architectural lighting. I am very proud to see that the master's and doctoral students who I bring out are successful in my field. Because it is a teacher's greatest contribution to society to be able to cultivate outstanding talents for the development of the industry.

Indeed, all people-oriented, talent training is the most fundamental driving force to promote the development of the industry. In the past years, Zhan Qingxuan has brought 18 graduate students and 7 doctoral students. The vast majority of these students have made remarkable achievements in their own industry.

At the same time, in China's lighting industry leaps and bounds, urban construction is in full swing, Zhan Qingxuan also participated in the planning and design of many key cities and architectural lighting projects in China, and has been widely recognized and welcomed by the society.
