On November 17, 2017, TCL Group announced a major investment in the construction of an integrated intelligent manufacturing base for photovoltaic modules in Huaizhou, specifically the Huaxing Optoelectronics High-Generation Module Subproject. The total investment is expected to reach approximately 9.6 billion yuan. This initiative aims to further strengthen TCL’s vertical integration in the semiconductor display sector, enhance supply chain efficiency, and optimize manufacturing capabilities. It also supports the company's broader strategy to expand its regional industrial footprint and promote collaboration across upstream and downstream industries, ultimately boosting TCL’s overall competitiveness.
The project is jointly funded by two subsidiaries of TCL Holdings: Huizhou Huaxing will contribute 7.58 billion yuan, while TCL Industrial Park will invest 1.855 billion yuan. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed by 2019, with an annual production capacity of 40 million LCD panels. The second phase, expected to be finished by 2021, will increase the annual output to 60 million LCD panels, significantly enhancing the company’s production capabilities.
Huaxing Optoelectronics, a key asset of TCL, has been gaining increasing attention from investors. In its mid-term report, TCL emphasized its focus on core industries and strategic restructuring. The company plans to use China Star Optoelectronics as a financing platform and retain only a few high-profit, asset-light businesses. This indicates that the semiconductor display business will become the main driver of revenue and profit for TCL in the future. With ongoing private placements and acquisitions, TCL is expected to fully own Huaxing Optoelectronics, moving away from its traditional identity as a comprehensive home appliance manufacturer.
Once completed, the China Star Optoelectronics High-Generation Module Subproject will house the most advanced liquid crystal panel production lines, including G11 and G8.5 facilities. It will provide high-quality display modules to both internal and external manufacturers, reinforcing the strength of the new semiconductor display industry in Huizhou. Additionally, the TCL Multimedia Intelligent Display Terminal Project is currently under development, aiming to create a supportive industrial ecosystem that integrates China Star Optoelectronics’ module production with multimedia device manufacturing. This synergy is expected to enhance TCL’s market position, strengthen its supply chain, and solidify its leadership in the semiconductor display industry.
