Display HDR Standard Announced: First Batch to Debut at CES2018

HDR, or High-Dynamic Range, was initially developed to improve a camera's ability to capture images in challenging lighting conditions. However, over the past two years, HDR has gained widespread adoption in notebooks, PC monitors, and smart TVs as consumers upgrade their devices and demand better screen resolution and image quality. With so many terms being thrown around—like HDR-10 and Dolby Vision—it's easy to get confused about what exactly HDR means and how it's implemented across different devices. To clarify, the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) introduced the first official HDR standard for PC monitors called DisplayHDR. This standard aims to bring consistency and clarity to how HDR is defined and measured on display panels. DisplayHDR 1.0 is divided into three tiers: DisplayHDR 400, DisplayHDR 600, and DisplayHDR 1000. These levels are based on key display characteristics such as brightness, color gamut, color depth, and response time. The DisplayHDR 400 standard requires a minimum of 400 nits of brightness, 95% of the ITU-R BT.709 color gamut, and support for HDR-10. It also mandates an 8-bit panel, which offers better color accuracy than the traditional 6-bit panels found in many older displays. Compared to SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) screens, DisplayHDR 400 provides significantly improved brightness and color depth. Moving up to DisplayHDR 600, the requirements increase to 600 nits of brightness, 99% ITU-R BT.709, and 90% DCI-P3 color coverage. The highest tier, DisplayHDR 1000, further raises the brightness requirement to 1000 nits while maintaining similar color performance. It's important to note that all three DisplayHDR levels require true 8-bit color panels. However, the VESA DisplayHDR certification is currently limited to LCD displays and does not apply to OLED technology. Additionally, it doesn't guarantee full compatibility with existing HDR content or games. VESA also announced that the first batch of DisplayHDR-certified products would be showcased at CES 2018, marking a significant step forward in bringing standardized HDR performance to the consumer electronics market.
