Thanks to powerful platforms like Apple’s ARKit and advanced hardware such as Microsoft’s HoloLens, the development of augmented reality is moving at a rapid pace, and there's no sign of it slowing down anytime soon. However, for truly immersive and high-quality AR experiences, current consumer and developer options remain expensive and limited in availability. While affordable AR headsets haven’t yet reached the mass market, the development community has been busy creating innovative tools that keep the excitement alive during this transitional phase.
One of the most promising projects is Stereolabs’ ZED Mini depth camera. This compact device is a smaller version of the ZED Long-Distance Camera and can be attached to the front of an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. It uses two "eyes" to capture real-world images and maps the data in real time, allowing for accurate 3D object tracking.
The system delivers a 720p resolution at 60fps, with 3A graphics and an impressive field of view exceeding 100 degrees. What makes it even more exciting is its built-in spatial tracking. Unlike other systems that rely on external sensors like SteamVR base stations or Rift’s tracking cameras, the ZED Mini can map environments accurately up to 15 meters without any additional hardware.
In addition to the ZED Mini, Stereolabs is also launching a new version of the ZED SDK, which is already being used by over 30,000 developers. The updated SDK includes plugins for Unity and Unreal Engine, making it easier to integrate interactive virtual objects and effects into AR applications. It also supports a wide range of controllers, including Vive, Oculus Touch, and PS Move, expanding the possibilities for user interaction.
Stereolabs will also provide a set of sample applications to inspire creativity—ranging from interactive planetariums to virtual large-screen TVs and mini-games. These examples are designed to help users explore the full potential of the ZED Mini and the new SDK.
The ZED Mini will be available for purchase starting December 18, priced at $499. On the same day, the latest version of the ZED SDK will also be released. If you're interested in pre-ordering, visit the official Stereolabs website to stay updated and secure your unit early.
