China Telecom is set to introduce a groundbreaking in-flight internet service, leveraging high-throughput satellites to offer passengers seamless web browsing and communication capabilities during flights. This new initiative is expected to open up a vast, untapped market for telecom operators, marking a significant step forward in aviation connectivity.
Recently, China Telecom announced its strategic partnership with China Aviation Equipment Corporation, aiming to expand the on-board internet project. The event was attended by high-level executives, including Chen Zhongyue, Deputy General Manager of China Telecom, and Sun Bo, Deputy General Manager of China Aviation Equipment Corporation. This collaboration signals a major shift in how airlines and telecom providers can work together to enhance passenger experience.

Lu Junjun, General Manager of China Telecom Group Satellite Communications Co., Ltd., was present at the signing ceremony, shedding light on the technology behind China Telecom’s in-flight internet service. The company’s high-throughput satellites are central to this innovation, enabling faster and more reliable connectivity for passengers.
According to industry estimates, by 2020, the total number of registered aircraft in China reached 4,600, with over 720 million passengers transported annually. Research shows that more than 73% of travelers prioritize internet access when choosing a flight, and this preference rises to nearly 100% for long-haul flights exceeding four hours. However, full-scale in-flight internet services remain limited domestically, presenting a huge opportunity for operators like China Telecom.
Established in April 2009, China Telecom Satellite Communications Co., Ltd. has been working on satellite-based internet solutions for years. As a specialized subsidiary of China Telecom, it offers a range of services, from web browsing and instant messaging to enterprise VPN access. For airlines, it provides operational data transmission, cabin entertainment updates, e-commerce support, and digital flight packages.
According to Operator World Network, China Telecom became the first domestic telecom operator to launch aviation internet services. In March 2014, it completed the construction of its satellite ground station and information security system. Then, in July of the same year, it launched the first public aviation internet experience service using Ku-band satellites on domestic flights.
Currently, China Telecom's in-flight internet business is gaining momentum. By September this year, its service had already been deployed across major airlines, including China Eastern, China Southern, Air China, Xiamen Airlines, and Hainan Airlines, serving over 870,000 passengers. It has now become the leading provider of in-flight internet services in China.
This latest agreement with China Aviation Materials marks a key milestone, signaling the full rollout of China Telecom’s on-board internet project to consumers. Beyond entertainment, the service holds great potential for applications such as command and control, fleet management, and real-time data exchange. As China Telecom continues to invest in high-throughput satellite technology, the future of aviation connectivity looks increasingly promising. With rapid advancements in satellite communication, the industry is entering a new era of growth and innovation.
