Volaris Airlines A320 will use LED lighting technology

Honeywell today announced that Volaris Airlines has decided to use Honeywell's Light Emitting Diode (LED) upgrade technology for its Airbus A320 navigation wingtip illumination.

Honeywell's LED wingtip navigation lighting is 40 times longer than current halogen lighting technology, which significantly reduces the maintenance costs of airline operators. Unlike other existing lighting technologies, replacing old lighting with LEDs is a simple process that does not require any modifications to the aircraft and does not add extra weight.

Jeff Johnston, vice president of platform components at Honeywell, said: "This upgrade will reduce aircraft downtime and reduce operator maintenance costs, as LEDs can increase the life of lighting equipment from 500 hours to 20,000 hours. Volaris' benefits include reduced lamp replacement, reduced spare parts inventory, and reduced labor costs."

Volaris will begin to improve the wingtip lighting of 20 Airbus A320 aircraft starting in December 2009 and is scheduled to be completed by early 2010. After December 2009, Honeywell LED lighting will be standard on the newly produced Airbus A320.

Honeywell is a pioneer in the advancement of technology in the LED field, many of which are now used in consumer electronics such as large-screen TVs, computers and other display systems.

For more than a decade, Honeywell's LED technology has been used in commercial and military aircraft. For more than 80 years, almost every fixed-wing and rotor-wing lighting product and complete lighting system has been designed and manufactured by Honeywell. (Edit: Looking up at the stars)
