SCR dimming into LED driver applications

After the development of LED lighting, due to its green, energy-saving and high-efficiency characteristics, it has gradually replaced traditional lighting sources such as incandescent fluorescent lamps and become a new generation of lighting sources in the 21st century. At present, the LED dimming solutions existing on the market include thyristor dimming, pulse width modulation dimming, and segmented switch dimming. Due to the tight integration of thyristor dimming and incandescent fluorescent lamps, it is dominant in the market. Pulse width modulation is usually only applicable to dimming lamps because it cannot be compatible with thyristor leads, and segmented switch dimming cannot achieve continuous dimming. In summary, this paper combines the characteristics of DU8608 and the advantages of thyristor to complete the thyristor dimming LED driver.
How thyristors work
Thyristors are also known as thyristors. Since its inception in the 1950s, it has grown into a large family. Its main members are unidirectional thyristors, bidirectional thyristors, light-controlled thyristors, reverse-thyristing thyristors, turn-off thyristors, fast thyristors, and so on. The thyristor dimmer is a relic of the incandescent era.
The thyristor is equivalent to a controllable diode. When the control electrode is applied with a certain voltage, the cathode and the anode are turned on. The thyristor is a unidirectional thyristor and a two-way thyristor, and is three electrodes. The unidirectional thyristor has a cathode, an anode, and a control electrode. The two-way thyristor is equivalent to the reverse parallel connection of two single thyristors.

Development prospects and prospects
The advantage of thyristors is that they form an alliance with incandescent halogen lamps, occupying a large dimming market. If the LED is intended to replace the position of the thyristor dimming incandescent and halogen lamps, it is also compatible with thyristor dimming.
In order to use LEDs more conveniently and widely, we need to develop more driver chips that are directly compatible with existing thyristor dimming, so that we can directly replace incandescent lamps and make LEDs have a wider market. This article describes the duty cycle company's DU8608, which is compatible with thyristor dimming. Compared with other solutions, it has a large dimming range and guarantees working efficiency under rated load, so it has a good development prospect.
Since the thyristor dimming destroys the waveform of the sine wave, the power factor value is reduced, and the non-sinusoidal waveform increases the harmonic coefficient and the like. Therefore, in the future development, we must further improve the IC, so that the dimming should complete the large power factor value under the premise of ensuring efficiency. If the power factor and efficiency are guaranteed, the advantages of LED as a new energy source will become more and more obvious, and it will gradually replace incandescent lamps and become a new generation of daily illumination sources.
