How to choose LED bulbs

**How to Choose LED Bulbs** *Published on December 6, 2017 | Source: China Government Procurement News No. 720, 4th Edition* When it comes to lighting solutions, LED bulbs have become a popular choice due to their energy efficiency and long lifespan. With the growing number of options available in the market, it's important to understand how to select the right LED bulb that suits your needs. ### Understanding the Standards To ensure quality and safety, several national standards have been established for LED bulbs. These include: 1. **GB24906-2010**: This is a mandatory standard that outlines the basic electrical and mechanical safety requirements for self-ballasted LED lamps with voltages above 50V. 2. **GB/T24908-2014**: A recommended standard that defines performance requirements such as luminous efficiency and overall quality. 3. **GB30255-2013**: Another mandatory standard that sets minimum energy efficiency limits and defines energy efficiency ratings. These standards help consumers identify products that meet the necessary safety and performance criteria. ### Decoding the Model Name LED bulbs are typically labeled with a five-part model name. The first part usually represents the type of bulb (e.g., BPZ), followed by specifications like luminous flux, light distribution type, color characteristics, and additional information such as the lamp base or other details. Understanding these codes can help you choose a bulb that matches your specific lighting needs. ### Key Purchase Considerations When buying LED bulbs, there are several important factors to consider: #### 1. Luminous Efficacy (Light Output) Luminous efficacy is measured in lumens per watt (lm/W) and indicates how efficiently a bulb converts electricity into light. The national standard requires at least 60 lm/W, but many high-quality products offer over 90 lm/W, with some reaching up to 110 lm/W or more. #### 2. Color Rendering Index (CRI) The CRI measures how well a light source reveals the colors of objects compared to natural light. A higher CRI value (up to 100) means better color accuracy. For most applications, a CRI of 80 or above is considered acceptable, while values of 90 or higher are ideal for environments where accurate color representation is crucial. #### 3. Lifespan According to the national standard, LED bulbs should last at least 25,000 hours. If used for 8 hours a day, this equates to nearly 8 years of use. Choosing a bulb with a longer lifespan not only saves money but also reduces waste. ### Additional Tips for Purchasing #### 1. Check the Packaging High-quality LED bulbs will have clear labeling on the packaging, including voltage, power, frequency, and manufacturer information. Look for certifications and contact details to ensure the product is from a reliable source. #### 2. Consider Color Temperature LED bulbs come in different color temperatures: warm white (yellowish light) and cool white (bluish light). Warm light is often preferred in living spaces, while cool light is better suited for offices or work areas. #### 3. Evaluate Power Consumption Common wattages for LED bulbs include 3W, 5W, 7W, 9W, and 11W. Based on an efficiency of around 90 lm/W, a 5W LED bulb provides similar brightness to a 40W incandescent bulb. #### 4. Review Performance Metrics Always check the product’s specifications, including luminous efficacy, CRI, and expected lifespan. If the values aren’t clearly marked, calculate the efficacy using the ratio of luminous flux to power. By taking these factors into account, you can make an informed decision when choosing LED bulbs that are both efficient and suitable for your environment. *Author: China Quality Certification Center* *This article is copyrighted by China Government Procurement News.
