**Tang Guoqing: Seven "New" Directions for the Future of Urban Lighting**

At the annual meeting of "Zhongya" organized by the Zhongzhao Society, Secretary Li Guobin delivered a thought-provoking speech titled "Seven New Directions for the Future of Urban Lighting." This presentation sparked many discussions and reflections. As I listened to his insights, I felt inspired to share my own thoughts on how urban lighting should evolve in the coming years.
1. **New Melody**
Urban lighting must reflect the characteristics of a new era. Last year, urban lighting was highly trending, and this year it’s even more so. It's an excellent opportunity for innovation. Regardless of the different opinions, the key is to meet the needs of modern society. The lighting should be warm, peaceful, and bring joy to people. If color temperature is the "keynote" of a city, then adding the right colors becomes its "soul."
2. **New Idea**
Urban lighting should adopt a forward-thinking approach. Cities are divided into different zones, but lighting can bridge the gap between urban and rural areas. How to avoid the issue of "one thousand cities looking the same"? Designers need creativity and cultural awareness. For example, Xu Dongliang's work at the BRIC Leaders Summit showed how a city can find its unique identity through lighting design.
3. **New Classic**
Urban lighting should be visually pleasing. Iconic buildings like Guangzhou’s Xiaoman Waist or Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower are successful because their lighting enhances their architectural features. For less distinctive structures, designers must think creatively to make them stand out. Innovations such as intelligent color temperature control and blue-light-free LED technology offer great potential for future developments.
4. **New Thought**
Urban lighting must embrace cross-border integration. With the rise of LED technology, media architecture has become a powerful tool. Combining LEDs with multimedia and stage lighting allows for more dynamic and immersive lighting experiences, making urban spaces more engaging and alive.
5. **New Horizon**
Urban lighting should aim to become a symbol of China's global influence. Just as China has led in high-speed rail and online shopping, the next big step could be establishing itself as a leader in urban lighting. Chinese brands have the chance to go global, especially under the Belt and Road Initiative. Local designers must build confidence and take part in international projects.
6. **New Challenge**
Urban lighting is no longer just about the industry itself. With the rise of the internet, tech giants are eyeing the lighting sector. If we don’t adapt, we risk being overshadowed by companies like BAT. Similarly, the construction and building materials industries are also entering the space. We must stay competitive and not let our position be taken over by external forces.
7. **New Opportunity**
The future of urban lighting lies in creating value through smart systems. By managing and maintaining existing infrastructure, we can generate both economic and social value. Imagine thousands of squares connected, hundreds of cities synchronized, and millions of displays working together—this presents countless business opportunities.
In summary, the future of urban lighting is shaped by these seven "new" directions. If we add to that, it could be summarized as four modernizations: intelligent interconnection, centralized control, geographical indication, and time-specific characteristics. These ideas were inspired by the speeches of Secretary-General Dou Linping and other industry experts.
