Tang Guoqing: Seven "new" directions for the future development of urban lighting

**Tang Guoqing: Seven "New" Directions for the Future Development of Urban Lighting** Published on January 18, 2018 Source: Zhongzhao.com At the annual meeting of "Zhongya" organized by the Zhongzhao Society, Secretary Li Guobin delivered a keynote speech (see the title), and I would like to share a few thoughts from the event. As we face the future, it's time to explore these seven new directions that can shape the evolution of urban lighting. 1. **New Melody** Urban lighting must reflect the characteristics of a new era. Last year, urban lighting was extremely popular, and this year it's even more so. It's a golden opportunity that may not come again for a century. To seize this moment, all discussions should align with the needs of the times. The warm and peaceful illumination is essential, bringing joy and a sense of belonging to the people. If color temperature is the "keynote" of the city, then adding the right colors becomes its "soul." 2. **New Idea** Urban lighting should adopt a forward-thinking approach. Cities are divided into different areas, but lighting is one of the fastest ways to reduce the urban-rural gap. How can we avoid the problem of "a thousand cities looking the same"? Designers need to find creative entry points. For instance, Xu Dongliang’s work at the BRIC Summit used the flag's representative colors as inspiration. Finding a unique identity is key, and this must be done with a strong sense of public interest. 3. **New Classic** Urban lighting should be visually pleasing. Each city has its own architectural identity, and lighting plays a vital role in highlighting it. Buildings like Guangzhou's Xiaoman Waist or Shanghai's Oriental Pearl Tower are successful because their shapes are distinctive. When buildings are similar, designers must think creatively to make them stand out. Innovations such as intelligent color temperature control, blue-light-free yellow light technology, and LED sodium light sources are examples worth exploring further. 4. **New Thought** Urban lighting must embrace cross-border integration. Thanks to LEDs, media architecture has become a powerful tool in urban lighting. Combining LEDs with multimedia and stage lighting creates more dynamic and immersive experiences. Projection and visual displays bring a new level of creativity and realism to cityscapes. 5. **New Horizon** Urban lighting should aim for global influence. With China’s four major innovations—high-speed rail, nuclear power, e-commerce, and shared bikes—could urban lighting be the fifth? As China moves toward the "Belt and Road" initiative, the city's light should follow the trend. Chinese lighting brands have the potential to go global, and local designers should gain confidence and international visibility. Participating in global bids is an important step forward. 6. **New Challenge** Urban lighting is no longer just about the lighting industry. With the rise of the internet, tech giants like BAT are eyeing the market. If we don’t adapt, we risk being overtaken. Similarly, the construction and building materials industries are also entering the scene. We must stay ahead to avoid being replaced. Just like instant noodles, if no one chooses them, they will fade away. Who wants to illuminate a building if no one notices? 7. **New Opportunity** Creating value through urban lighting opens up new opportunities. By managing and operating existing urban assets, we can generate economic and social value. Imagine thousands of squares connected, hundreds of cities synchronized, and millions of displays broadcasting together. This could lead to countless business opportunities. In summary, the future of urban lighting lies in these seven new directions. If we add to this, it can be seen as the “four modernizations”: intelligent interconnection, centralized control, geographical indication, and time-specific features. After listening to the insightful speeches by Secretary Dou Linping and Teacher Xu Dongliang, I hope my thoughts are helpful. If there are any mistakes, they are purely due to my age and possible early signs of aging. Please feel free to correct me! Tags: wholesale lamps, lighting procurement, join the billion lamp network
