ON Semiconductor: LED lighting solutions held media exchange in Shenzhen News Building

Recently, ON Semiconductor held a media exchange meeting on LED lighting solutions in Shenzhen News Building, on the challenges of energy efficiency issues facing the world, energy-efficient opportunities in lighting, extensive LED applications, and various LED solutions. Discussed.

The issue of energy efficiency is the focus of attention in various countries around the world. According to Laurent Jenck (Zheng Lekang), director of LED general lighting and power marketing and systems engineering at ON Semiconductor, the demand for energy has increased by 59 during the 15 years from 1990 to 2005. At the same time, energy production increased by only 40%, and imbalances in supply and demand led people to seek new solutions. According to statistics, in 2001, all lighting consumed in the United States accounted for 22% of total energy consumption. “Taking buildings as an example,” Laurent said, “about 30% of its total energy consumption comes from lighting.” For this reason, many countries have banned the use of incandescent lamps and encouraged the use of energy-saving lamps. In the US incentive program group, it also includes the promotion of LED lighting. In fact, LED lighting has begun to penetrate more and more into various application areas, and the relevant standard regulations are also being planned intensively. Recently, the US Department of Energy has worked closely with relevant standards development organizations to accelerate the development and implementation of the necessary solid state lighting (SSL) standards. According to Laurent, Anson recently also "contacted" the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS) to negotiate on China's domestic LED lighting efficiency standards.

At present, LEDs have developed well in the fields of automobiles, mobile devices, LED backlights, addressable signs, and general lighting. For example, in the automotive field, the tail center high-position brake light is the first to use LED lights. Now, more than 40% of the central high-position brake lights have adopted red LEDs. Daytime running lights (DRL) and headlights have begun to switch to LEDs, and car headlights are expected to switch to high-brightness LEDs in the near future. “The development of LED backlights is also very fast. It is expected that 50% of LCD monitors will use LED backlights in the next five years,” Laurent said. “Of course, the premise is that the overall price of LED backlights is similar to that of CCFLs, and the design is simpler. At present, the cost of LED is still the biggest factor that hinders its acceptance by the market. It is believed that as the unit cost decreases due to the increase in output, its popularity will gradually increase.

Laurent said that the current application challenges of LED general lighting are the same as the power supply, mainly reflected in the following six aspects:
1. Requires high energy efficiency, even for low power applications, because of the need for total energy efficiency and thermal constraints;
2. Requires power factor correction (PFC), even when the power is relatively low;
3. Space is limited, especially in applications that replace bulbs;
4. Overall reliability is very important;
5. The input power range is wider and supports 277V AC input;
6. Supports dimming such as triacs (TRIAC).

The traditional dimming design of incandescent lamps and halogen lamps is mostly based on TRIAC. When the energy-saving LED lighting scheme is introduced, the requirement that the dimmer must be connected to the resistive load becomes a bottleneck for promoting new energy-saving lighting. Laurent specifically demonstrated the use of the TRIAC-compliant offline LED driver product NCL30000 with PFC. UCL30000 can easily and quickly realize the change of LED bulb from weak to strong, from strong to weak, by using any dimming controller available on the market. At the conference, Laurent and marketing director of the Asia Pacific Power Management Department of the company, Jiang Jialiang, also demonstrated the LED lighting for the car and the redesigned table lamp under the existing halogen lamp lamp mold. The newly designed table lamp replaces the halogen bulb with Cree MC-E LED module, and the 8W power supply constructed by ON Semiconductor NCP1014 replaces the 60Hz transformer with the original desk lamp weighing 1.2kg. The luminous efficiency reaches 72.9, far exceeding the original 17.8. Light effect.

At present, ON Semiconductor's LED lighting products have covered the fields of drive, control and sensing, power management and conversion, thermal design, discrete devices and FETs. Energy efficiency is a major feature of its products. Take the 100-200W high-power LED street lighting solution as an example. With the NCP1607 PFC controller (more than 95% efficiency) and the NCP1397 resonant mode controller with half-bridge drive (90% efficiency), there is no switching loss. Therefore, the efficiency of the entire system is more than 85%.
