This Azure machine learning-based tool handles some complex data, including student performance, school infrastructure and teacher skills to find meaningful patterns. The results of the analysis were used by local governments to adjust plans, processes and investments in the most important areas. In Andhra Pradesh, more than 10,000 schools use this cloud-based solution to accurately predict school dropout rates. This will enable the state education department to reduce student dropouts at the right time.

Microsoft India has also applied the concept of machine learning to predicting the rate of degradation after ophthalmic surgery. A group of doctors from LVPEI worked closely with Microsoft to build predictive models for measuring the success rate of ophthalmic surgery. This solution will help doctors make informed decisions when explaining the procedure and outcomes to patients and, more importantly, reducing pain and medical costs.

Another area in which Microsoft Azure and machine learning have an impact is agriculture. The International Crops Research Institute of the International Semi-Arid Region (ICRISAT) has used Azure Machine Learning to bring digital agriculture to thousands of farmers in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The solution includes a mobile app for farmers and a personalized village advisory control panel. This guided seeding application leverages the power of machine learning to infer insights from weather forecasting models, historical data related to precipitation, and crop yields. When these data are combined with machine learning algorithms, the ideal seeding time can be accurately predicted, so that farmers can get the most benefit.

The village advisory control panel communicates to farmers the advice on some environmental factors that determine crop yields. The dashboard also incorporates farmland data from many regions of the state that ICRISAT collects and then uploads to Azure. Visual indicators provide important metrics such as soil quality, fertilization recommendations and a seven-day weather forecast. In a recent experiment in Andhra Pradesh, information was sent to farmers in the form of a local language.
