Nokia and Telia collaborate on 5G-based Industry 4.0 experiment

Nokia and Finnish telecom company Telia have successfully tested and utilized 5G with ultra-low latency and high bandwidth to meet the requirements of tight timing applications and improve the productivity of the manufacturing environment.

According to reports, 5G allows telecom operators and operators to connect to assets and leverage new features such as machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to effectively transform operations. Nokia and Telia and Intel (Intel) and software startup Finwe use the 28GHz trial 5G wireless access network in Nokia's Conscious Factory. Nokia uses its 5G AirScale and MulTI-access Edge CompuTIng (MEC) platform.

Finwe's Image App is used to view and analyze images in the assembly line. The app uses machine learning capabilities to notify the assembly line operator of any process inconsistencies in real time for real-time correction.

In the second test, Nokia and Telia demonstrated how to enable the latter to provide cloud remote services to commercial customers. In Telia's data center in Helsinki, both parties tested the AirFrame data center solution, the Nokia MEC platform and Finwe's image analysis app.

Nokia continues to use the MEC platform and the Finwe Image Analysis App in the Conscious Factory through 4G networks. In addition, the ability to upgrade Nokia AirScale to 5G via software will provide a new way to automate the expansion of its business.

Intel vice president Caroline Chan said that the company will continue to work with Nokia to provide the necessary infrastructure to pave the way for 5G open and software-defined networks to be expanded. Marc Rouanne, president of Nokia's mobile network, pointed out that the company's 5G capabilities will enable telecom operators such as Telia to leverage machine learning and automation by turning on network data and intelligence.

As Nokia continues to offer machine learning capabilities and advanced algorithms in the ReefShark chipset, it will further enhance radio performance, allowing customers to benefit from new opportunities in 5G and IoT.
